A repeat blackmailer, Brandon Woolveridge, 24, formerly of Melbourne Street, Barrow-in-Furness, has been incarcerated for the second time after threatening to kill missing pets. In September, he demanded £1,000 from a dog owner whose pet was lost. Woolveridge had been jailed last year following convictions for nine counts of blackmail, during which he “humiliated” his victims. Woolveridge pleaded guilty to blackmail and was handed a sentence of two years and three months at Preston Crown Court. Cumbria Police reported that Woolveridge contacted the victim on September 21, insisting on payment. He told the victim: “It’s going to cost you £1,000 to get the dog back but how do I know you won’t call the police?”. He declined to send images of the dog but provided bank details and stated he would call back after the initial payment. Detective Sergeant James Aiston commented that Woolveridge targeted “vulnerable pet owners by demanding money for safe return of the pet, knowing fine well he did not have possession of the animal.” Det Sgt Aiston added, “We are thankful for the vigilance and cooperation of the victim in the case who was able to recognise Woolveridge’s voice and make recordings of the calls.” He further noted, “We understand losing a pet can be really upsetting for people, unfortunately some people like Woolveridge will try and exploit this.” Cumbria Police advised the public against sending money or rewards to individuals without first confirming the safe possession of their animal. The force strongly recommended requesting verification such as a video call, photographs, and full details of the persons who claim to have found the pet.
