A significant thoroughfare linking the Isle of Man’s capital with an eastern village is slated for a five-week closure to facilitate gas infrastructure maintenance. Specifically, Summer Hill in Douglas has been inaccessible to traffic from its intersection with the promenade up to Strathallan Road, with the closure effective until December 1. Drivers will be directed through a diversion route utilizing King Edward Road and Imperial Terrace to navigate around the affected zone. A spokesperson for Isle of Man Energy stated that the Department of Infrastructure granted approval for this closure because the existing gas main is situated within the road’s surface. The spokesman further confirmed that the project commenced earlier in the year but was temporarily halted for the duration of the Manx Grand Prix motorcycle festival. He also mentioned that the company is dedicated to modernizing and replacing the main pipelines beneath the island’s roads to “make sure our networks are ready for low carbon energy and renewable biofuels when available”. Throughout the entire period of these works, emergency access will be continuously upheld.
