An individual has been sentenced to 45 months in prison after taking a 15-year-old girl to a hotel for sexual activity. Sven Halstein, aged 37, initiated communication with the girl via the Badoo dating application. During their exchanges, she explicitly stated her age and that she was communicating from school, as was presented at Carlisle Crown Court. Notwithstanding this information, he transmitted explicit messages to her on WhatsApp and organized a meeting at a Premier Inn located in Penrith, Cumbria. There, he forced himself upon her and participated in sexual acts. Judge Nicholas Barker stated his conviction that Halstein was aware the girl was “young and vulnerable” and that his conduct constituted an illegal act. During the time the two were in the hotel room, the girl managed to send a message to a friend, stating she was “going to get raped,” according to prosecutor Rob Wyn Jones. Her friends and father subsequently proceeded to the hotel, where they found her “upset and shaky.” Upon his arrest, Halstein informed law enforcement that he “just wanted to have fun.” An examination of his mobile phone revealed that he had previously conducted a web search for “sex with minors in England.” Halstein, identified as a German national without a permanent residence, pleaded guilty to six charges: engaging in both penetrative and non-penetrative sexual activity with a child, sexual communication with a child, and arranging or facilitating the perpetration of a child sex offence through the reservation of the hotel room. The severe repercussions of his criminal actions were detailed in a powerful statement submitted by the girl’s mother, who expressed her hope that the teenager would be “strong enough to get through all of this.” The girl has received counselling and has described seldom leaving her residence and experiencing guilt regarding the incident. During Halstein’s sentencing on Friday, Judge Barker informed him that ensuring the child’s safety was his obligation. Brendan O’Leary, representing Halstein, noted that the defendant possessed no prior criminal record and conveyed “his genuine and sincere remorse.” In addition to the custodial sentence, Halstein is mandated to register as a sex offender and adhere to a stringent prevention order, both for the duration of his life. Furthermore, he will be prohibited from employment involving children and vulnerable adults.
