Alex Yee has been named as one of six contenders for the 2024 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. BBC Sport reviews the triathlete’s year, highlighted by five photographs. At the Paris Olympics, Alex Yee secured a triathlon gold medal, delivering a memorable performance. The race concluded dramatically as Yee surpassed his competitor, Hayden Wilde, in the final stages, finishing six seconds ahead of the New Zealander. He had been 14 seconds behind Wilde at the commencement of the last 2.5km lap. Subsequently in the Games, Yee, alongside his Great Britain team-mates Georgia Taylor-Brown, Samuel Dickinson, and Beth Potter, earned a bronze medal in the mixed team relay. Although initially declared as silver medalists, a subsequent review by race officials confirmed the United States in second place and Britain in third. Their finishing time was one minute 25.40 seconds, placing them just one second behind the gold medalists, Germany. Yee was chosen to be a Great Britain flagbearer for the Olympics closing ceremony, sharing the honor with trampoline gold medallist Bryony Page. In August, Yee triumphed at Supertri Boston, where his distinctive ‘cold’ celebration garnered attention, seemingly leaving Wilde unimpressed. Yee, who stated his objective was to display personality and potentially enhance the sport, secured victories in two of the five Supertri events during 2024. October saw Yee conclude an exceptional year by claiming his inaugural world title, achieved by finishing third in the World Triathlon Championship Finals held in Andalusia. He remarked, “This is something which has evaded me for the last three years so makes it all the more sweeter.”
