James Deighton, a BBC rugby league commentator who harbored a childhood fear of water, has successfully completed a swimming challenge for charity. He was one of five BBC Radio Leeds presenters who participated in “The Thousand Mile Challenge for BBC Children in Need 2024,” an event that required swimming a mile daily over five days. Deighton remarked: “That eight-year-old boy that was terrified and scared and embarrassed is feeling pretty proud of himself right now.” The challenge saw Deighton complete the distance alongside his colleagues Katherine Hannah, Nick Ahad, Emily Pilbeam, and Sarah Wakefield. Sport presenter Ms. Hannah commented on the team’s perseverance, stating: “The whole team have been amazing to keep going. If anybody thinks this is not a challenge, this was absolutely a challenge, but it’s for such a good cause.”
