Since her return in March 2024 following a 19-month absence, Simona Halep has secured victory in only one of her five matches across both the WTA and Challenger tours. The former world number one stated her need to remain patient after her most recent comeback on the WTA Tour concluded with a straight-set loss. The 33-year-old was participating in merely her second contest at the top tier of professional tennis since her eligibility to compete was reinstated following a doping suspension. The athlete, a two-time Grand Slam champion, made her return to competitive play at the Miami Open in March, subsequent to her initial four-year penalty being shortened to nine months. Her defeat with a score of 6-3, 6-3 at the Hong Kong Tennis Open against China’s Yung Yae, who holds the 45th position globally, marked Halep’s initial tour-level appearance since the Miami tournament, having been sidelined by a knee injury. Halep, who had participated in two matches at a second-tier Challenger tournament at the close of September, commented: “My level was not bad at all but the opponent played really well and had confidence,”. She added: “I’m not happy with the way I played but it was much better than the previous match.” Currently holding the 883rd position in the global rankings, Halep is dependent on receiving tournament wildcards in her efforts to reconstruct her professional career. Halep, a champion of the 2018 French Open and Wimbledon in 2019, consistently asserted her innocence following accusations of two distinct doping violations. Although her appeal was partially successful, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) determined that Halep had not, ‘on the balance of probabilities’, intentionally ingested roxadustat – an anti-anaemia medication that promotes the body’s red blood cell production. Furthermore, Cas dismissed a second accusation concerning irregularities identified in her athlete biological passport. Regarding her future plans, Halep stated: “It depends on the wildcards, but I just want to work harder because I need a stronger body to perform at this level. “I will take it slow. I have to give myself patience and try to get better day by day.”
