A government official expressed optimism that a “dramatic” transformation in tourism could result from a planned new Universal Studios theme park. During a parliamentary discussion, Sir Chris Bryant informed Blake Stephenson, the Member of Parliament for Mid Bedfordshire, of his expectation that the attraction would increase the number of visitors to the United Kingdom. In 2023, Universal Destinations and Experiences acquired a 476-acre (193-hectare) plot of land in Kempston Hardwick, close to Bedford, with the intention of developing a new theme park and resort experience. Mr. Stephenson, who initiated the parliamentary discussion on tourism, stated: “Universal could be the key to unlock the Government’s growth mission in Bedfordshire.” Nevertheless, Sir Chris, the minister responsible for tourism, chose not to “enter into the specifics” regarding current negotiations concerning the Universal Studios plans, which have the potential to create a total of 20,000 employment opportunities and, once operational, contribute almost £50 billion to the UK economy. He remarked: “I am very hopeful that we will be able to get to the very significant and dramatic change that this would make not only to visitor numbers in Bedfordshire but for the whole of the United Kingdom.” Universal currently operates five entertainment and resort facilities globally, including locations in the United States, Japan, and China. Sir Chris noted that the UK’s international visitor figures have not yet recovered to pre-Covid pandemic levels, but emphasized the necessity for an “ambitious” approach to the government’s tourism strategy. The site designated for the Universal Resort is situated along the East West Rail route, which he indicated could facilitate “tens of thousands of new homes and jobs.” In the course of the discussion, Mr. Stephenson highlighted the region’s attractions for tourists, such as its historical landmarks and cultural legacy. He suggested that commuter towns beyond London are often merely transit points and should instead be “promoted as destinations.” He asserted: “Bedfordshire should be a prime location for a thriving tourism industry.” He added: “Where what used to be the world’s largest brickworks site at Stewartby in my constituency… now it has the potential to power our local economy again as the home of the Universal UK theme park project.” He expressed optimism that this development would provide the area with a chance to “turbocharge” its tourism, hospitality, and leisure industries, attracting approximately 12 million visitors annually.
