An agricultural exhibition in Cornwall has prohibited the presence of livestock at its upcoming event this year. This decision stems from concerns regarding a viral outbreak impacting certain farm animals across the south-east, east, and north-east regions of England. Organizers of The Liskeard Prime Stock Show announced that no animals will be featured at its 103rd exhibition, scheduled for Saturday. The show has also called off its sheep and cattle competitions, citing apprehension about the bluetongue virus (BTV-3). According to the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), this midge-borne illness possesses the potential to be lethal for affected animals “in the most severe cases.” The event’s organizers urged the public to “continue to come along and support our farmers,” confirming that non-animal categories, including contests for handicrafts, pumpkin carving, and baking, will proceed as originally scheduled. Jane Pascoe, a Cornwall councillor, commented that these limitations represent “a big disappointment” for agricultural workers. Pascoe stated, “It’s an important event on the agricultural calendar,” further remarking that “Farmers look forward to the prime stock shows.” She also noted: “Because it’s a good social event we’re going to continue and have the exhibits and demonstrations and people talking – there’s all sorts going on.” A containment zone, established due to the virus, was initially implemented in a section of Norfolk in December 2023. This zone has since been expanded to encompass the majority of eastern England. The pathogen impacts animals with cloven hooves, such as sheep, goats, cattle, deer, and camels. While it can lead to infertility and respiratory issues in sheep, cattle, and goats, it poses no threat to human health. The designated zone currently includes Bedfordshire, Berkshire (part), Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, City of Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, East Sussex, Essex, Greater London, Hampshire (part), Hertfordshire, Kent, Leicestershire (part), Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Suffolk, Surrey and West Sussex. Defra reported that 12 instances of the virus have been documented beyond the established restriction zone, with some occurring in Cornwall.
