An explosive device detonated within a crowd at a Thai festival, resulting in the deaths of at least three individuals and injuries to dozens more. This incident occurred just before midnight local time on Friday at the Red Cross Doi Loyfa fair, an annual event hosted in the Umphang district of Thailand’s northern Tak province. According to reports from the Associated Press and local media, which cite Thai police, two individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the event, though no formal charges have yet been filed. Police confirmed that a minimum of 48 people sustained injuries, with six of them in critical condition. Authorities received notification of the occurrence at 23:30 local time (16:30 GMT) on Friday. The Umphang rescue team issued a statement indicating that the explosive was projected and detonated at the base of an outdoor stage where individuals were dancing. The statement also mentioned that some injured individuals were transported to a local hospital. Multiple reports indicate that the explosion resulted from an improvised explosive device (IED). Video footage, purportedly from the site and shared on social media platforms, depicts chaotic scenes as emergency personnel and attendees provided aid to the injured. A particular video seemingly shows at least two individuals receiving CPR while lying near each other, surrounded by confused crowds. The footage then shifts to display a person severing a man’s trousers to expose a profusely bleeding leg wound. Post-incident images, distributed by the rescue team, illustrate a secured area marked by a cordon, littered with debris and adorned with lights. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra conveyed her sympathies to the families of the victims and those wounded in the bombing via a post on X. She stated that she had instructed police and security organizations to probe the explosion’s origin and assist those impacted. Furthermore, she mandated an augmented police presence to supervise all festival activities. The Bangkok Post reported that between 8,000 and 9,000 attendees participated in this year’s week-long festival, with the assault occurring on its second-to-last evening.
