Several businesses have incurred £300 fines for illegally disposing of waste in a town centre. Piles of refuse were observed in Fore Street in Trowbridge, which Wiltshire Council subsequently determined had been left by four businesses. All of the owners admitted to not possessing waste contracts and were unable to provide the required legal documentation to the council. Councillor Nick Holder, the cabinet member for street scene, commented: “Commercial waste collections are not included within business rates, so all businesses no matter how big or small, must also have a waste collection contract in place.” A council spokesperson added that the fines have since been paid, and the businesses have now established commercial waste contracts. The authority has since launched a “Stop at Source” campaign designed to inform businesses and residents about proper waste management, aiming to decrease instances of fly-tipping. Mr. Holder further stated: “Any waste that is produced from a commercial activity is classed as commercial waste and businesses have an obligation to ensure that it is disposed of safely, legally and responsibly – this includes having the correct documentation.”
