Wigan Athletic’s manager, Shaun Maloney, has guided the team to five victories in 16 League One matches this season. Maloney stated that the League One club is “doing OK financially” as they get ready for their FA Cup second-round match, with the prospect of a profitable away fixture in the third round if they advance. In 2023, local entrepreneur Mike Danson, who holds a 25% ownership share in the Super League team Wigan Warriors, acquired the Latics. At that point, the club was experiencing financial difficulties, having received a winding-up petition from His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs due to outstanding tax obligations. However, since Danson assumed ownership, the club’s financial situation has significantly improved. Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester, Maloney remarked, “My owner would definitely like us to get a big team away from home.” He further elaborated on the club’s financial progress, stating, “The work we’ve done this season to cut the losses of the club is really significant.” Maloney added, “What we’ve done this season compared to what will come out [in the next set of accounts], we’re doing OK financially.” He concluded, “There’s not as much pressure as last year but there’s still a little bit there.” Wigan, who secured the FA Cup in 2013, are scheduled to visit fellow League One team Cambridge United for their second-round match on Saturday. The club aims to secure another prominent third-round fixture, following their home game against Manchester United at the identical stage of the competition during the 2023-24 season. Maloney commented, “There’s a chance for us to get a team from a higher division and we had that last year which was amazing.” He affirmed the team’s determination, stating, “We’re going to fight like hell to get that. We’ll play how we normally do but we’ll try to be better than the last time we played at Cambridge.” Post navigation Alejandro Garnacho’s Finishing: A Key Area for Improvement Guardiola Extends Manchester City Stay Amidst Upcoming Challenges
