Police have indicated that drivers observed making U-turns to circumvent significant delays on a road in north Wales should anticipate receiving fines. The A55 was closed in both directions on Friday morning due to a fire near the Penmaenbach headland tunnel in Conwy county, leading to extensive traffic queues until its reopening around 13:00 GMT. North Wales Police reported that additional congestion resulted from motorists reversing their vehicles and proceeding against the flow of traffic. The force clarified that claims of “following others” do not constitute a valid justification. In a statement, police confirmed: “A number of drivers were spoken to and told to expect a letter through the post, likely to be a fine and points.” The statement continued, acknowledging the public’s frustration: “Nobody likes to be stuck on the carriageway and we know it’s incredibly frustrating and people have places to be – but all we ask is for a little bit of patience and understanding.” The police also extended “Huge thanks to all those who were patient.”
