A man has been brought before a court, facing charges of murdering a 42-year-old teacher in south London. James Madden, aged 38, faces a murder charge in connection with the death of Gemma Devonish. Ms Devonish passed away after being discovered with stab wounds at a residence on Nutfield Close, Carshalton, around 10:30 GMT on Thursday. Mr Madden, whose address is Railton Road, Brixton, attended Croydon Magistrates’ Court and has been remanded in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday at the Old Bailey. The headteacher of Roseberry School in Epsom, where Ms Devonish was employed, characterized her as “the kindest and most gentle of people,” adding that she was “devoted to her work and loved her pupils.” David Lach stated: “She was a wonderful teacher who inspired a love of her subject among all her students and went above and beyond to offer her time, expertise and care to the students in her classes and in her year group.” “Her loss to our school is incalculable, but she leaves the most incredible legacy in the hundreds of students that have been touched by her energy, passion and empathy.” “The hearts of the Rosebery community will be broken by this awful news, but the strength of our school has always been the way we have supported each other in times of adversity.” Officers from the Metropolitan Police and personnel from the London Ambulance Service responded to the address in Carshalton, but Ms Devonish was pronounced dead at the location. Mr Madden participated in the court proceedings remotely, via video link. He did not verbally confirm his name, but officers present with him verified his identity for the court.
