Nigel Clough, who guided Mansfield to automatic promotion from League Two in the 2023-24 season, stated that his team requires “a break” after experiencing their third consecutive 1-0 defeat. Mansfield, known as the Stags, appeared poised to secure a valuable point against League One leaders Wycombe, until Luke Leahy’s cross-shot arced over goalkeeper Christy Pym in the 93rd minute. This late goal secured Wycombe’s tenth consecutive victory overall and their eighth successive league win, maintaining their four-point lead over Wrexham. Clough characterized Wycombe’s decisive goal as “a fluke” and reported that the team’s dressing room was “devastated” following the final whistle. “It’s not just losing, it’s the manner [of it],” Clough conveyed to BBC Radio Nottingham. He added, “To come up with a fluke in the 93rd minute when we worked as hard as we did and played as well as we did is unbelievable.” This loss positioned the Stags in 10th place, three points shy of the top six, with matches in hand on the teams surrounding them and two games in hand on Barnsley, who currently occupy the final play-off spot. Following close defeats to Wrexham, Bristol Rovers, and most recently Wycombe, Clough expressed that these setbacks have been difficult to accept. “Three 1-0 defeats, three good performances against three good sides and we could have won all three,” he stated. Clough continued, “It’s cruel. If someone rips you to pieces and puts one in the top corner, you hold your hands up, but concede a fluke like that [against Wycombe] and there’s nothing you can do about it.” He concluded, “Three games – it doesn’t half get to you, but we must keep doing what we’re good at.” Despite the recent results, Clough remains convinced that circumstances will improve if his team maintains its current level of performance. “It has to, we will keep emphasising that to them,” he affirmed. Clough highlighted their performance, stating, “We’ve come to the league leaders and played like that. We played Wrexham off the park at times.” He summarized his view: “Football can kick you where it hurts. We just need a break. End of story. Yes, a little bit of quality at times, but more than anything a break and a fair run of the ball.”
