A family’s advocacy has led to the approval of a skatepark in a Lincolnshire village. North Kesteven District Council (NKDC) granted approval on 28 November for the skatepark, which is planned for Monson Playing Field in Skellingthorpe. Local residents Debbie and Matt, parents to 10-year-old Charlie, secured funding for the initiative, including £161,700 from the National Lottery Community Fund and £130,000 from Skellingthorpe Parish Council. According to Matt, construction of the skatepark is anticipated to commence in February, with an expected opening by late spring. The facility will be situated on the southern section of the playing field, necessitating the relocation of current play equipment to the northern section. It is designed to feature areas catering to various skill levels and styles. Debbie and Matt initially presented their concept to Skellingthorpe Parish Council in February 2023. Debbie commented, “It’s really exciting and it hasn’t been easy. It’s been hours of unpaid work.” Matt further stated, “It’s a relief to see that it has got to this point.” He elaborated, “Through taking our son to a lot of different skateparks, we have seen a lot of people using them and felt the atmosphere is really supportive and friendly.” He concluded, “The skatepark will be there for anyone that wants it.” Charlie described the endeavor as a “team effort,” noting that his school friends signed a petition he organized to “make the skatepark a reality.” He expressed, “I think it’ll be good for the village because it’ll be a great place to hang out and it’s an exhilarating sport. “I hope it’ll be used and enjoyed for years to come,” he said. Prior to the commencement of construction, planning stipulations require additional details regarding drainage, potential ecological effects, and the ongoing management and upkeep of the skatepark. Charlie conveyed his appreciation to all who signed his petition, and to Debbie and Matt for the assistance provided by Skellingthorpe Parish Council.
