A man has expressed feeling “completely at a loss” after a significant fire consumed possessions belonging to his deceased father. Sam Clay had recently received his father’s possessions; his father had passed away precisely one month prior to the deadly fire on Sunday, which devastated a flat on Main Street in Kirkby Lonsdale. The individual who died in the incident has been identified locally as Ben Taylor, aged 45, a business owner and a member of the rugby club in the Cumbrian town. Mr. Clay, himself a rugby player, stated he was “heartbroken” by the passing of his neighbor and friend. The fire occurred around 05:45 GMT, resulting in the destruction of three shops and several apartments situated at the intersection of Main Street and Market Street. Approximately 75 firefighters responded to the location to assist in containing the blaze. Mr. Clay recounted to BBC Radio Cumbria that he and his girlfriend were awakened by police officers instructing them to evacuate. He stated, “We grabbed the dog but unfortunately I lost a lot of pets.” He further explained, “I was a reptile breeder and I lost 26 pet snakes in the fire.” He mentioned that his landlord informed him of his neighbor’s death via a phone call. Mr. Clay added, “It was a massive shock. It took me two hours to understand what he just said.” Mr. Clay reported that numerous photographs and items of sentimental value were destroyed, in addition to “everything he had built up over the past five years in Kirkby Lonsdale.” He lamented, “I turned up here to play rugby with two holdalls and that was all I had. Now I have even less.” Over £15,000 has been collected through online fundraising efforts to support those impacted by the fire. “I can’t thank people enough,” Mr. Clay stated, further remarking, “We cannot believe the generosity from people.” He also shared, “I’m still processing the loss of my father really. It’s going to be a long time before I truly realise what’s actually unfolded over the few days. It’s heartbreaking stuff.” Mr. Clay is a player for Darlington Mowden Park RFC, which is organizing a match at the Northern Echo Arena on Saturday at 15:00, as part of its fundraising initiatives. The club commented, “Sam has been so strong dealing with the loss of his father and as a rugby club, we are very proud of how he has dealt with it and continued to play rugby.” It added, “To lose your home in the same month is an absolute travesty.” Post navigation Guildford Volunteers Spread Festive Cheer with Christmas Meal Deliveries Annual Charity Santa Dash Returns to Isle of Man Capital
