Construction has commenced on an initiative designed to enhance cycle paths and pedestrian walkways in a local community, despite a petition signed by hundreds of individuals opposing it. Northumberland County Council is allocating £14.7 million towards two significant “active travel” initiatives within the county, one of which is situated in Bedlington. Adam Hogg, a West Bedlington town councillor, characterized the project as “a waste of taxpayers’ money” and stated that there was “so much else that Bedlington needs more.” However, the local authority clarified that the funds were specifically earmarked for active travel projects and could not be diverted to other endeavors. The funding, sourced from the previous Conservative government’s Levelling Up Fund, is designated for a 4.3-mile (7km) active travel corridor for both pedestrians and cyclists, stretching from West Bedlington to East Sleekburn, incorporating connections to educational institutions and businesses. A distinct project will establish a link between Hexham train station and Corbridge. Work on the Bedlington initiative began on Monday, notwithstanding objections from numerous residents. Hogg remarked, “We had more than 1,000 people sign a petition against it, either online or a paper version.” He added, “It’s just the scale of it, several metres wide in some places, it won’t look right in a small town.” Alex Wallace, the Labour county councillor for Sleekburn, expressed that he “understands people who believe £9m could be spent better elsewhere,” yet he supports the scheme. He commented, “We need to give people alternatives to driving and this route connects with the new Bedlington Station.” Richard Wearmouth, Deputy leader of Northumberland County Council, stated, “It’s great that we’re now getting spades in the ground.” He further added, “Both will have a really positive impact.” The projects are slated for phased development, with the complete routes anticipated to be operational by early 2027.
