Celtic’s attacking options this season, including a revitalized Daizen Maeda, Nicolas Kuhn (reportedly a serious consideration for Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann), and a resurgent Callum McGregor contributing goals alongside strong midfield displays, have received considerable attention. This analysis will now focus on the team’s defensive performance. While Celtic has demonstrated strong attacking capabilities, scoring nearly three goals per game across 11 Premiership matches to date, their defensive record has been equally impressive. The signing of 38-year-old goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, which initially prompted questions, has been justified by his consistently excellent performances, notably against teams like Kilmarnock. The defenders positioned in front of Schmeichel have also delivered strong performances. Celtic’s defence has not conceded a single goal from open play in away Premiership matches this season. The only instance their goal was breached on the road was via a Ronan Hale penalty in Dingwall. At the start of the season, the preferred back four consisted of Alistair Johnston, Cameron-Carter Vickers, Liam Scales, and Greg Taylor. Auston Trusty and Alex Valle were subsequently acquired to reinforce the squad, with Trusty, a substantial signing, having recently surpassed the previously high-performing Scales in the lineup. All these players are expected to play significant roles, considering Celtic’s demanding schedule. By February 1st, Brendan Rodgers’ team will have competed in 20 matches over a 75-day period. In addition to the endurance of his attacking players, Rodgers is likely impressed by the concentration and discipline demonstrated by his defensive unit. They have conceded only one league goal away from home and two at home, the latter occurring during the high-scoring match against Aberdeen. The manager would emphasize that defensive efforts originate from the front of the team, with Maeda notably effective at closing down opposing space. Should teams manage to bypass Celtic’s press, they still encounter Schmeichel and the defensive line. By mid-November, Celtic had recorded 11 clean sheets in 18 games across all competitions. A comparison arises regarding which statistic is more remarkable: Celtic’s 31 league goals or the mere three goals conceded in the Premiership to date. Despite sharing the same points total as Aberdeen, Celtic’s goal difference stands 14 goals superior. While players such as Kuhn, Kyogo Furuhashi, and Maeda often receive significant praise, Celtic supporters should also acknowledge the defence, which merits equivalent recognition.
