British number one Katie Boulter was decisively beaten in straight sets by Russia’s top seed, Diana Shnaider, in the final match of the Hong Kong Open. Despite this outcome, Boulter is set to advance to at least 23rd in the world rankings, a position achieved by reaching the final. Seeded second, Boulter was competing for her third WTA title of the current season but was unable to gain a foothold in the match, ultimately losing 6-1, 6-2 to the world number 14 in a contest lasting one hour and 11 minutes. Notwithstanding the loss, Boulter will enter the world’s top 25 for the first time, following a strong conclusion to her season. The 28-year-old Boulter offered her remarks following the match, stating: “Massive congratulations to Diana, her family and her team. What an incredible week and incredible season. You absolutely killed me out there today, but I will get you next time.” She also expressed gratitude to her support staff: “A massive thank you to my team. You push me every day to try to be better and I am sure I will be back. What a season we have had.” Boulter’s upcoming commitments include representing Great Britain at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals, scheduled for 15 November. Furthermore, she is slated to be seeded at the Australian Open in January, a position that is expected to help her avoid encounters with top-ranked competitors in the initial rounds of the tournament. Commenting on the performance, former British number one Laura Robson remarked on Sky Sports: “Katie was happy to make it to the final, given how she was feeling off the court – she was physically drained. She’s in the world’s top 25 and there’s so many positives. All round, a fantastic 2024 for her.” Shnaider’s victory marks her fourth WTA final win this season, having triumphed in all four finals she has contested across all three playing surfaces. Her previous successes this year include titles in Thailand, Hungary, and Germany. The 20-year-old left-handed player, Shnaider, expressed her feelings about the win, stating: “It feels amazing. I hope I can keep going like this every season. I will keep working. I am very happy to win the last tournament of the season with my family here. The whole week has been enjoyable and memorable.”
