On Wednesday, snow and ice caused significant disruption in areas of North Yorkshire, leading to driving conditions on certain roads being characterized as “treacherous.” North Yorkshire Police reported receiving numerous accounts of “lots of congestion,” especially along coastal routes. Previously, the A169 connecting Sleights and Whitby, the A171 at Fylingdales, and the A170 extending from Whitby to Guisborough were deemed “impassable”; however, authorities confirmed their subsequent reopening. A yellow weather warning for snow and ice remains active throughout the county until 10:00 GMT on Thursday. North Yorkshire Councillor Keane Duncan stated that gritters had been deployed on “all the priority routes” and would continue operations “every day of the cold weather event.” He further commented, “We’ve seen significant snowfall up on the coastal areas, particularly up on the higher ground in the North Yorkshire Moors.” Councillor Duncan also noted, “There has also been some particularly hazardous conditions, which have also caught our bin collection crews off guard and hampered their efforts today as well.” Forestry England announced on its website that Dalby Forest had been closed “until further notice.” Alpamare water park in Scarborough ceased operations on Wednesday because of the weather conditions. Its operators posted on Facebook: “Sorry for any inconvenience, but we have to put our customer and employee safety first. If you have a ticket booked today we will honour it for another day.” Boro Cars Scarborough reported that its drivers were experiencing “unavoidable delays,” issuing a warning: “The snow is really coming down, and road conditions are tough across the area. Our drivers are out there doing their best to get to you safely, but delays are unavoidable right now.” The RAC observed a substantial increase in vehicle breakdowns, primarily attributed to battery failures in the cold weather; concurrently, National Rail advised commuters to verify their travel plans prior to departure. BBC weather presenter Paul Hudson indicated that “milder weather is just around the corner,” forecasting temperatures to reach 14C (57F) on Sunday, though this increase would be accompanied by strong winds and heavy rain.
