An official report has disclosed that a passenger passed away subsequent to a cruise ship encountering adverse weather conditions last year. The vessel, identified as the Spirit of Discovery, experienced force 11 winds in the Bay of Biscay on 4 November 2023. The interim report from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) indicates that over 100 passengers sustained injuries, and eight individuals required hospitalisation upon the ship’s arrival in Portsmouth two days subsequent to the incident. One of these hospitalised individuals later succumbed to their injuries. A representative for Saga, the operator of the Spirit of Discovery, confirmed their cooperation with the MAIB’s ongoing investigation. The company also conveyed its “thoughts and deepest sympathies” to the family of the deceased guest. The report detailed that 943 passengers and 503 crew members were aboard the vessel when it “lost propulsion in heavy weather,” resulting in the ship moving “violently while the crew restarted the vessel’s propulsion.” These problems, compounded by storm-force conditions, persisted from approximately 12:30 GMT on 4 November until the subsequent morning. Consequently, the ship sustained “internal and external damage.” The MAIB functions as a governmental body tasked with investigating marine accidents involving UK vessels, with its primary objective being the prevention of future incidents rather than the assignment of blame. Regarding this particular incident, the MAIB stated its examination encompasses “all aspects of the accident,” such as the cause of propulsion loss, the ship’s readiness for operation in severe weather, and the onboard response and medical care provided. The interim report indicated that the investigation is nearing completion, after which a comprehensive report will be released for stakeholder consultation.
