Manchester United’s head coach, Ruben Amorim, expressed his readiness to help Marcus Rashford regain his peak performance, while also calling on the England international to demonstrate his commitment. Rashford, a forward, netted the initial goal of Amorim’s tenure during Sunday’s match against Ipswich. However, his performance at Portman Road subsequently faltered, particularly after being deployed in a traditional number nine position, a role he reportedly dislikes. Approximately 18 months have passed since Rashford last displayed his most prolific scoring ability, which saw him achieve a career-high of 30 goals during Erik ten Hag’s inaugural season at United. Amorim acknowledged that the role assigned to Rashford on Sunday was not optimal and committed to collaborating with the 27-year-old player to restore his peak performance. Nevertheless, United’s new manager stated that Rashford himself is the primary determinant in this process. Amorim remarked, “We’ll try to find the right solution for him but he has to be Marcus, first of all, to try to return to that moment. Then he will have all the help of the staff, the club and the fans because he is a Manchester United boy. But he has to be the first one to want it.” On Sunday, Rashford scored at Portman Road within 90 seconds. This Premier League season, United has scored 13 goals, a tally surpassed by all but Everton, Crystal Palace, and Southampton. Alejandro Garnacho leads the team’s scoring with three goals. Given these statistics, it is unsurprising that Amorim has been associated with a potential transfer for Viktor Gyokeres, a former Sporting player and ex-Coventry forward, who currently ranks highly in the Champions League top scorers’ chart with five goals this season. However, Amorim is redirecting discussions away from such speculation, believing that the current United squad possesses sufficient talent to increase its goal-scoring frequency. “Of course there is a concern,” Amorim stated. “You could feel it in the second half [against Ipswich] when we controlled possession of the ball but we were not dangerous. I know the question is if I need a new striker scoring goals, but I think we have to improve as a team. We have quality players who can score so many goals. Rasmus [Hojlund] and Josh [Zirkzee] and Rashford will score more goals. Even Bruno [Fernandes] has to score more goals. Amad [Diallo] has to be better near the goal. All these guys need to improve.” Amorim expressed his anticipation for his inaugural home match with United, scheduled for Thursday against Norwegian club Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League. On Wednesday, Amorim encountered a crowded news conference room at United’s Carrington training ground, three days after voicing complaints in Ipswich regarding his extensive media obligations. This occasion, however, was free from unexpected interruptions, unlike his post-match interview on Sky Sports in Ipswich, which was disrupted by Ipswich shareholder and pop superstar Ed Sheeran. Sheeran’s intervention has been a subject of widespread discussion, and the singer has since issued an apology. Nevertheless, Amorim considered the incident to be inconsequential. Amorim commented, “It was nothing. It was a simple question to say hello to one of the commentators. I was with Roy Keane. He’s a real star. It was really OK.” Captain Bruno Fernandes reiterated his conviction that United’s players must accept their portion of responsibility for Erik ten Hag’s recent dismissal. Fernandes communicated with Ten Hag following his termination on 28 October. Fernandes stated, “Obviously, if you change a manager in mid-season, it is because things are not going as you want – and everyone has to take the blame. As I said before, it is easier to get rid of a manager than 15 or 20 players. But now our focus is on what the future can bring and as quickly as possible get the new ideas of the manager.”
