Scots traditional singer Iona Fyfe has been designated as the new rector for the University of Aberdeen. She expressed her honor that students had placed their trust in her “to take on the historic role.” Fyfe, a native of Huntly in Aberdeenshire, was named Scots singer of the year in 2018. Her three-year term is set to commence on 1 January, coinciding with the conclusion of current rector Martina Chukwuma–Ezike’s tenure. She secured the position through a student vote, surpassing the other candidate, Dr Camilo Torres Barragán. Fyfe commented, “It’s a profound privilege to represent students in my home region.” Student president Christina Schmid stated, “We are happy that in Iona we have a rector who will advocate for students and work together with the students’ union to represent students at all levels.”
