Motorists intending to travel through the Saltash tunnel should factor in additional time for their trips during the upcoming fortnight. Starting on Tuesday, the tunnel will be closed nightly between 20:00 and 06:00 GMT, continuing until December 17. National Highways confirmed that alternative routes would be established, and that survey and preliminary work would commence in advance of a refurbishment scheduled for 2025. This undertaking is part of a £20m initiative aimed at modernising the tunnel, encompassing upgrades to its electrical systems, the installation of new LED lighting, and enhancements to fans and signage. Julian Mitchell, the tunnel manager for National Highways, stated that it was “difficult to work safely within the structure without closing it overnight”. He added, “We’re keeping all closures to an absolute minimum, we thank all drivers and residents in advance for their co-operation and patience and advise people to plan their journeys and allow a little extra time.” The primary upgrade work is slated to occur in two distinct phases, with the initial phase beginning early in the new year and the subsequent phase commencing from summer 2025.
