Tottenham Hotspur’s goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario, who has played 55 matches for the club, is expected to be sidelined for “months, not weeks” due to an ankle injury, as confirmed by manager Ange Postecoglou. Vicario underwent surgery after sustaining a broken ankle during Saturday’s match against Manchester City, where he played for 60 minutes despite the injury. The 28-year-old goalkeeper received medical attention in the first half after colliding with City winger Savinho but continued to play the entire match, which Tottenham won 4-0. “We saw he picked up an injury during the game and he was sore at half-time, but there was no doubt about him continuing,” stated Spurs boss Postecoglou. He added, “It is a testament to him as a person. He is as tough as nails, as tough as they come.” Postecoglou also remarked, “It’s a blow but we’ve dealt with setbacks before and we’ll deal with this one.” The Italian international goalkeeper has only missed four games since his transfer from Empoli in June 2023, none of which were Premier League fixtures. “The fact he played at that level for 60-odd minutes with a fractured ankle was quite outstanding,” Postecoglou further commented. He continued, “Irrespective of the injury, it was a really outstanding performance. Taking that into context, it’s certainly one for the record books at this club in terms of outstanding performances.” Fraser Forster, aged 36, has served as a stand-in goalkeeper on all four occasions Vicario has been unavailable, including a Carabao Cup victory against Coventry in September and Europa League matches versus AZ Alkmaar and Galatasaray. Postecoglou expressed confidence in Forster and dismissed the possibility of signing a free agent to cover for Vicario. He also stated that the injury “doesn’t change our plans” for the upcoming January transfer window. “That’s not going to happen – I don’t think signing a free agent now is going to help us,” Postecoglou elaborated. “Fraser, I’ve known for a long time. He’s such a strong character in the group and always ready to play,” he concluded. Tottenham, currently positioned fifth in the Premier League, are scheduled to host Roma in the Europa League on Thursday, followed by a match against Fulham on Sunday.
