Officials have confirmed the discovery of a 64-year-old woman’s body, four days after she reportedly fell into a sinkhole situated above a disused mine in Pennsylvania. Elizabeth Pollard’s family members reported her disappearance on Monday night, following her departure to look for her cat. Subsequent investigations established that she had fallen into a 30-ft (9m) sinkhole, which was linked to an old abandoned coal mine in the town of Marguerite. By Wednesday, police officials had expressed a strong conviction that the operation had transitioned from a rescue effort to a recovery mission. The Westmoreland County Coroner verified the finding of Ms Pollard’s body to KDKA-TV, part of CBS, the BBC’s US partner. On Thursday, teams involved in the search voiced concerns about a potential mine collapse while they persisted in their efforts to locate her remains. Pennsylvania State Trooper Steve Limani stated on Thursday, “The goal is to remove the dirt and them to come up from underneath and extract that dirt.” He further explained, “We’re going to take that dirt and put it in separate piles.” Limani added, “We’re going to have people reviewing that dirt, looking through it, possibly if we could fine a cell phone or anything that could be of significance.” During the initial stages of the search, recovery teams deployed electronic devices and cameras into the sinkhole, yet these efforts yielded no detections. Rescuers also employed water to clear dirt and clay from the mine, which ceased operations in the mid-20th century. The search operation, at its peak, involved over 100 individuals. While uncommon in the US, fatalities resulting from sinkholes do happen. The American Geosciences Institute reports that Pennsylvania is one of the states with a high prevalence of sinkholes, alongside Florida, Texas, Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky, and Tennessee. The region where Ms Pollard died has seen previous reports of similar sinkholes, primarily attributed to the subsidence and movement of disused underground mines. Copyright 2024 BBC.
