Residents in Cornwall have been invited to provide their perspectives on a council proposal aimed at achieving £49m in savings. Cornwall Council must identify these savings to balance its budget for the 2025/26 financial year. The proposed measures include implementing efficiency savings, a 4.99% increase in council tax charges, and reductions to certain public services. The authority’s cabinet members approved an initial budget draft at a meeting on Wednesday, prior to a seven-week public consultation period. The authority acknowledged that its financial standing had been strengthened by the Government’s budget announcement last month. However, it noted that the escalating cost of delivering statutory services was placing increased pressure on its budget, and its revenue growth was not keeping pace. Statutory services encompass adult social care, children’s services, and emergency housing. Among the options being considered are introducing charges for the use of additional council-operated car parks and decreasing the opening hours at some household waste recycling centres. The council also anticipates generating extra revenue by attracting commercial sponsorship for roundabouts and car parks. Councillor David Harris, cabinet portfolio holder for resources, emphasized that while the proposed savings were “lawful and achievable,” they were not “desirable.” He admitted that individuals would face higher taxes while experiencing a reduction in services. He stated: “Our biggest spending services are the ones people don’t see – adult social and children with special needs.” He further explained: “Thankfully that doesn’t touch the majority of people in Cornwall. People don’t see the breadth of what we do.” He urged the public to participate in the consultation, saying: “I welcome any comments. If people engage hopefully they’ll understand the issues of what’s going on.” The public can submit their feedback between 15 November and 5 January. A final decision regarding next year’s budget is expected to be made by the council in February.
