An organization that offers sustenance and shelter to individuals experiencing homelessness during the Christmas season is seeking volunteers. Christmas Care Swindon, operating from The Haven Day Centre located on Queen’s Drive, has consistently offered hospitality, such as breakfasts and hot lunches, to homeless and vulnerable individuals each Christmas since 1988. For its operations between December 24 and December 29 this year, the charity requires 160 volunteers to assist with preparing and distributing meals to its beneficiaries. Vicky Hellyer, a trustee for the charity, encouraged individuals to contribute their time, stating: “It’s a very heart-warming contrast to sitting and eating at home.” Mrs. Hellyer recounted that her initial involvement with the organization began almost two decades ago, prompted by viewing television programs about homelessness. She stated: “I’ve always lived a pretty comfortable life and the cards in my hand have been winning cards and I was absolutely knocked sideways by it.” Subsequently, she chose to volunteer alongside her children, initially assisting with donation sorting and later engaging with the primary initiative. “Our client group have really difficult lives for 51 weeks a year with all sorts of difficulties. For them it is a real break in the struggle that is the rest of their lives,” she commented. She clarified that typical shifts last three hours and operate between 08:15 and 18:00. “We’re looking for really warm people who come together as a team,” she added. The deadline for volunteer applications is November 10, with forms accessible on the charity’s official website. Mrs. Hellyer noted that for individuals unable to volunteer their time, the organization also welcomes food donations, with two designated collection days scheduled at the Haven Centre on December 14 and December 22.
