The Salvation Army has initiated its annual toy drive, designed to assist families facing financial difficulties during the Christmas period. This initiative, which gathers toys and gift donations for distribution each December, provided 4,000 items to 499 children in 2023. Established in 2004, the organization maintains various collection points, notably at its headquarters located on Ballacottier Crescent, Braddan. Captain Rachael Nieuwoudt, co-leader of the Isle of Man church, stated that Christmas is a period when “financial worries” are brought into “sharp focus”. She further noted that the ongoing cost of living crisis continues to have a “devastating impact” on families struggling to afford heating for their homes or nutritious meals. According to Ms. Nieuwoudt, enabling parents to provide a gift alleviates financial burdens and “helps bring the joy of Christmas into their homes”. Additional locations for gift donations include branches of the Isle of Man Bank and The Entertainer store within the Strand Shopping Centre, with collections running until 30 November. Furthermore, collection boxes will be available in the foyer of Noble’s Hospital, at Garaghyn Glass on the Noble’s Hospital site, Ramsey Cottage Hospital, the Western Wellbeing Centre in Peel, and the Southern Wellbeing Centre in Port Erin, until 6 December. Ms. Nieuwoudt stated that this year’s appeal seeks to “bring some respite to those who are struggling the most”. Acceptable gifts, which must be new, encompass items such as educational toys, bath toys, books, dolls, action figures, sports equipment, toiletries, make-up, gloves, scarves, hats, hair accessories, and chocolates.
