Police have confirmed that additional officers will be deployed across the city for the upcoming football match between Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace. The rivalry game is scheduled to take place at the Amex Stadium this Sunday, commencing at 14:00 GMT. Sussex Police also stated that a Public Space Protection Order will be enforced within the city centre. The force reiterated that “Fans attending were informed that alcohol outside of licensed premises, including from bottles and cans, can be seized and removed by officers.” According to police, the augmented presence aims to guarantee that all individuals present at the football match have a “safe and enjoyable experience.” Anticipated travel disruptions into the city are also expected, especially in the vicinity of Brighton railway station. Sussex Police advised: “Residents and visitors making journeys are advised to allow extra travel time and to check updates with transport providers.” In February, seven individuals were apprehended following altercations between supporters of the two clubs. The arrests encompassed charges such as assault, assault on an emergency worker, affray, and violations of the Public Order Act, with two of these being aggravated by homophobia. At that time, police reported that one officer sustained injuries prior to kick-off, reportedly from a “thrown pyrotechnic.” Furthermore, in March 2022, eight people were taken into custody during a confrontation involving the clubs, among them a woman suspected of possessing an offensive weapon. The remaining individuals faced arrest on suspicion of offences such as bringing a firework into the stadium, assault, and theft.
