After nearly two weeks, residents in Rhondda Cynon Taf have received confirmation that their tap water is once again safe for consumption. Welsh Water had previously issued a boil water notice to thousands of households following necessary repairs at a treatment facility damaged by Storm Bert. The utility company confirmed that customers can now resume normal tap water use, as recent tests have verified the safety of the water quality. Welsh Water had previously extended an apology and enhanced its compensation offer to both residential and commercial customers impacted by the situation. The initial problem stemmed from heavy rainfall during Storm Bert, which resulted in flood damage at the Tynywaun Water Treatment Works, located above Treherbert in Rhondda Cynon Taf. Consequently, the “boil water notice” was disseminated to approximately 12,000 households across Rhondda. This directive specifically affected residents residing in Blaenrhondda, Blaencwm, Tynewydd, Treherbert, Treorchy, Cwmparc, Ton Pentre, Gelli, parts of Pentre, Tonypandy, and Ystrad. To mitigate the impact, Welsh Water established three water bottle stations within the affected region. Additionally, vulnerable customers received bottled water through home deliveries, and supplies were also provided to hospitals, schools, and care homes. As customers can now safely consume their tap water, the bottled water stations are scheduled for removal, and home delivery services will cease. Households affected by the notice are slated to receive a goodwill payment totaling £250 each, while businesses will be compensated with £500 each. Peter Perry, Welsh Water’s chief executive, issued a statement saying: “We appreciate the significant impact that the notice has had several communities in Rhondda Cynon Taf and for this we are truly sorry.” He added, “We have worked day and night to put things right and we’d like to thank all our customers for their patience and for bearing with us during this time.”
