The smoking cessation service in Telford and Wrekin is set to expand. This decision follows the council’s statement that smoking continues to be a “significant public health issue”. The Stop Smoking service, operated by Telford and Wrekin Council, will increase the availability of appointments with professionals dedicated to assisting individuals in quitting. Additionally, an increased number of in-person clinics will be established within the community, providing residents with enhanced access to support conveniently located near their homes. The service has also initiated a new campaign, named Crush the Habit, designed to motivate individuals to cease smoking for their own benefit and the welfare of their family and friends. This initiative seeks to encourage smokers to quit by emphasizing the beneficial impacts their decision can have on their family members, friends, and the broader community. Components of the scheme include personal success stories, motivational messages, complimentary access to Stop Smoking appointments, and expert guidance. Professionals will examine smokers’ motivations and habits, assist in establishing a “quit date”, and provide nicotine replacement therapy. Councillor Kelly Middleton, cabinet member for healthier, safer and stronger communities, stated, “We understand that quitting smoking can be challenging, but with the right support and motivation, it is possible.” Middleton, an ex-smoker, quit in 2022 after smoking for 35 years. She added, “The Healthy Lifestyles team are reassuring and supportive for anyone looking to crush the habit.” Furthermore, she noted, “As well as the free appointments on offer, you become part of the wider Healthy Telford community where you can speak to people going through similar experiences and work together to become healthier.” For more content, BBC Shropshire can be followed on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X, and Instagram.
