The provisional relocation of a market in Nottinghamshire is slated to become permanent. Gedling Borough Council has announced its intention to establish Eagle Square as the enduring location for Arnold Market, following its initial move there in 2022. The council stated that feedback from traders and businesses regarding this decision, which is contingent on final approvals, “highlighted strong support” for the change. Over £20,000 in funding has been allocated for the installation of new canopies early next year, and recent modifications have been made to the square’s layout to enhance accessibility, the council added. A public consultation gathered input from more than 130 shoppers, business proprietors, and traders. The authority reported that 48% of residents favored the permanent relocation, while 62% of businesses and all market traders expressed support for the proposals. Suggestions arising from the consultation included a greater diversity of market stalls, consistent deep cleaning of the vicinity, and the introduction of specialized markets such as farmers’ or artisan events, the council further noted. Council leader John Clarke commented: “Arnold Market is a key part of the town’s identity, and keeping it at Eagle Square is the right decision for the community.” A definitive decision is anticipated in early 2025, according to the council.
