Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff has stated that manager Eddie Howe’s confidence in him is the “biggest thing” contributing to his current assured displays, and that he is finding renewed enjoyment in football following a shift in his “perspective”. The Magpies have secured victories in all six matches Longstaff has commenced this season, notably delivering strong showings in the most recent two fixtures against Arsenal and Nottingham Forest. Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle, Longstaff remarked, “The midfield group is really strong,” adding, “When you look around it’s all internationals. It’s just about trying to bring my strengths to the team.” He further emphasized, “I know the manager trusts me which is the biggest thing. No matter what anyone ever says, the fact he trusts me gives me the most confidence.” Longstaff experienced a demanding 2023-24 campaign, participating in 46 games across all competitions, which was punctuated by an ankle issue. However, he feels that the “burden” on him has now been somewhat alleviated. “It’s funny,” he commented, “the season we qualified for the Champions League, I tried to enjoy it as much as possible. “Then, last year there was games every three days and with lads being injured, I think the burden of trying to win every game can mean the enjoyment leaves a little bit.” He continued by explaining his current outlook: “Turning 27, I’m thinking I’ve got a maximum of 10 years left playing football and my perspective has changed a little bit. I’ve had a little boy now too so I’m just trying to enjoy the games as much as I can and hopefully being a bit freer will help performances.”
