An additional £1 million in aid is being allocated to vulnerable older individuals in Kent this winter, who are confronting “difficult decisions about energy or food.” Kent County Council intends to utilize these funds, provided by the Department for Work and Pensions, to offer specific assistance to older residents experiencing financial hardship who do not meet the eligibility criteria for pension credit and the fuel allowance. The winter fuel payment, which historically assisted all pensioners with energy expenses, was subject to a government announcement in July stating that it would henceforth be restricted to individuals with low incomes who are recipients of specific benefits. The support program established by the council offers vouchers redeemable for either food or energy, tailored to an individual’s specific requirements. Council leader Roger Gough stated: “This support is aimed at those who will experience real pressure throughout the winter and may have to make difficult decisions about energy or food.” Gough encouraged residents who might qualify for pension credit payments to ensure they register promptly. According to the council, an estimated £68 million in Kent remains unclaimed, with approximately 18,000 eligible households currently not receiving this assistance.
