This winter, over 350 trees in Jersey that were destroyed by Storm Ciarán are scheduled for replacement. Jersey Trees for Life announced plans to reforest the entire Railway Walk, situated near La Moye, commencing at Corbière on December 9 and aiming for completion at St Aubin by early 2025. The charitable organization also stated its intention to establish a new woodland area adjacent to Le Feugerel, located between Le Clos Orange and the Railway Walk. The charity further indicated that volunteers would be invited to assist with the planting of the young trees. The numerous mature trees along the Railway Walk that were lost during Storm Ciarán will be substituted with a varied assortment of native species, according to the charity. It was also mentioned that personnel from the States’ infrastructure and environment department would provide assistance in clearing and preparing the ground, enabling volunteers to commence planting the new trees. The new woodland is envisioned as “an attractive, biodiverse area for all islanders to enjoy,” the organization added. John Michel, representing Jersey Trees for Life, explained that a blend of primarily native whips and trees would be planted, chosen for their suitability to the location, which he described as being quite exposed to the north-westerly salt-laden winds that traverse La Moye Golf Course. He further stated: “By selecting native trees, we will provide nectar, fruit, and seeds for pollinators, birds, bats, and other wildlife. This will also offer a wonderful range of seasonal shapes, colours and textures for everyone to enjoy.” Mr. Michel noted that saplings of oak, ash, lime, and sweet chestnut have been cultivated in Jersey using locally sourced seeds.
