An investigation has determined that a pilot who perished in an aircraft accident may have undergone a “medical incapacitation.” The light aircraft, identified as a Eurofox 912(S), went down in fields situated east of Darlton Airfield, close to Retford in Nottinghamshire, on 26 July 2023. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) report confirmed that after successfully towing and releasing a glider at an altitude of 3,000ft (914m), the aircraft initiated its descent back towards the airfield prior to the crash. The report, released on Thursday, stated that no indications of a technical malfunction were found. The AAIB, responsible for examining serious aircraft incidents within the UK, conducted this investigation. According to the authority’s report, the aircraft’s descent initially seemed normal. Nevertheless, upon passing through 1,000ft (300m), the plane veered into a left turn, deviating from the airfield’s final approach path. The report indicated that the aircraft maintained a descending left turn until the point of impact. Despite the post-mortem examination report not showing evidence of a medical event, the investigation concluded that the pilot might have suffered a “partial or full medical incapacitation which rendered him incapable of controlling the aircraft.”
