A marina’s decision to issue a two-week notice for boat owners to relocate their vessels, in connection with upcoming development plans, has drawn criticism from one owner. Associated British Ports (ABP), which owns and operates both the Port of Ipswich and the Ipswich Beacon Marina, intends to enhance the area and plans to transfer 39 boats to the opposing side of the waterfront. Mark Worship, a resident of Rayleigh, Essex, who berths his boat at the marina, expressed his dissatisfaction with this decision. ABP stated that its plans have garnered “strong support” and confirmed it would be reaching out to those impacted to facilitate a smooth relocation process. The company submitted updated plans in July, incorporating what it described as prior compromises made with boat owners. The proposal includes the construction of new pontoons situated in front of Coprolite Street and the primary university building. This initiative requires approval from Ipswich Borough Council, which ABP anticipated receiving by year-end. Boat owners in the vicinity have now been informed that the current pontoons on the northern side have reached the conclusion of their “usable life.” Consequently, they are required to move their vessels to the opposing side of the wet dock within approximately two weeks, prior to the onset of the winter period. Mr. Worship acquired his initial boat 11 years ago in Norfolk before transferring it to Ipswich Marina, though he indicated he would eventually move it elsewhere. He commented, “Although we’ve all been looking about places, especially at this time of year, you don’t want to take your boat too far out because the sea is a bit rougher.” Given that some owners have already departed, Mr. Worship expressed his inability to comprehend the decision from a “business point of view.” The board of ABP recently sanctioned a £2m investment, which Paul Ager, the divisional port manager, characterized as a “strong vote of confidence.” He further stated, “These plans reflect feedback from customers, stakeholders, and the wider public, who have expressed strong support for upgrading berthing facilities on the northern side of the wet dock.” “While we understand the relocation may cause disruption to some vessel owners, this decision is necessary to ensure the safety of marina users and our team.” Post navigation Typhoo Tea Faces Imminent Administration Amidst Financial Decline Jet2 to Establish New Base at London Luton Airport
