Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has expressed that his team is performing beyond initial expectations, yet he does not anticipate their Premier League title contenders will falter in the championship race in the manner of “Marc Cucurella.” On Sunday, the Blues achieved a 4-3 victory over Tottenham, overcoming a two-goal deficit. Both of Tottenham’s initial goals occurred after Cucurella lost his footing. Maresca assumed the role of Chelsea boss during the summer, succeeding Mauricio Pochettino, who had guided the London club to a sixth-place finish. Currently, Chelsea occupies second place, trailing leaders Liverpool by just four points. Liverpool holds a game in hand, as their scheduled Saturday fixture against Everton was postponed due to Storm Darragh. Following the impressive comeback win, Maresca commented, “We are ahead of my expectation,” adding, “In terms of the way we play on the ball, off the ball and in terms of the results.” However, the Italian coach believes Chelsea is not yet “ready” to contend for the league title. He further remarked, in a light-hearted reference to his Spanish left-back’s mishap—who changed his boots after Tottenham’s second goal—that “Arsenal, [Manchester] City and Liverpool probably don’t slide – like Cucurella did.” Maresca then stated, “To be serious, we are not ready. We are far from these teams, but we focus on day-by-day and trying to improve the team.” He also outlined his strategy: “The plan or the idea is to not let the players slow down. They cannot drop because they know another player is waiting to come in.” Cole Palmer has accumulated 11 goals and six assists in the Premier League this season to date. While Cole Palmer played a minor role in Jadon Sancho’s excellent finish that initiated Chelsea’s recovery at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the England international was crucial to the subsequent three goals, spearheading the Blues to their derby success. The 22-year-old calmly converted a penalty to equalize for the Blues, and his intricate run and shot subsequently set up Enzo Fernandez’s volley, making the score 3-2. A daring ‘Panenka’ penalty, which was his second goal, concluded Palmer’s outstanding performance, prompting former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher to draw comparisons between him and Chelsea’s legendary footballers. “People fear [him] when he has the ball,” Carragher told Sky Sports. He continued, “When you look at Chelsea over the years, you look at flair players and you look at Gianfranco Zola and Eden Hazard. He has probably done more than Zola already in his 18 months at the club.” Carragher added, “He is going to go down as one of the biggest players for Chelsea if he keeps doing what he is doing. He is a very special player, and that’s not just in the Premier League, it is in Europe and world football as well.” Palmer has achieved 50 goal involvements (comprising 33 goals and 17 assists) in just 48 Premier League appearances. He ranks as the fourth quickest player to reach this milestone, with Manchester City’s Erling Haaland (39 matches), former Newcastle striker Andy Cole (43 matches), and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (46 matches) achieving it in fewer games for a club in the competition. Jamie Redknapp, a former midfielder for Liverpool and Spurs, commented, “Palmer’s move to Chelsea has been life changing.” He further observed, “The things he does on the ball are frightening. He is a throwback of a player, like he is playing with his mates. It is effortless for him.”
