A local council has rejected proposals to demolish a garage to construct five new residences. Numerous individuals were present at a Wiltshire Council meeting to voice opposition to the plans, citing concerns about potential job losses and a reduction in services within Urchfont, a village situated near Devizes. Urchfont Vehicles, a business employing nine individuals, operates from this location, which has served as either a garage or a forge for more than 200 years. Councillor Philip Whitehead, who resigned from his position as planning committee chair to object to the proposals, stated that constructing residential properties on the site would “destroy 200 years of history, and a viable business.” The committee convened on Thursday and voted to reject the proposal, citing the potential loss of employment and a local service, even though the site had been designated for development within the neighbourhood plan. Mr. Whitehead reported that residents are “very relieved” by the outcome, but he cautioned that the developer retains the option to appeal the ruling. Tracy Lloyd, who has leased the premises and operated the business for 12 years, expressed that she has been “completely overwhelmed” by the “unbelievable” community support. However, she acknowledged that the prospect of the decision being overturned on appeal is “tough.” She stated, “It would cost far too much to move. We just have to keep going until we’re evicted.” Ms. Lloyd also described the potential impact on her staff as “difficult,” noting that two employees have been with the garage for 35 and 25 years, respectively. A “huge community turnout” was observed at the meeting, where local residents articulated their objections. Mr. Whitehead characterized the business as “part of the village.” He further commented, “Five houses can go anywhere. They don’t have to go where the garage is – at the loss of nine jobs.” He indicated his intention to collaborate with the developer to dissuade them from appealing the council’s decision.
