Patricia Kaliati, a prominent member of Malawi’s opposition and secretary general of the UTM party, has been charged with conspiring to assassinate President Lazarus Chakwera. Her arrest occurred last week on suspicion of “conspiring with others to commit a serious offence.” During her court appearance on Monday in Lilongwe, Malawi’s capital, the 57-year-old politician remained silent. However, her legal representative asserted her innocence, according to reports from local media outlets. Limited information regarding the alleged conspiracy has been disclosed, and several opposition figures contend that the accusations against Kaliati are politically motivated. Prior to the hearing, supporters of the UTM party assembled outside the courthouse, where they sang anti-government songs, as reported by the AFP news agency. Within the courtroom, it was revealed that Kaliati allegedly had two co-conspirators, who are reportedly at large. The magistrate ultimately granted Kaliati bail, allowing her release while investigations proceed, despite the state prosecutor’s request for her continued detention for an additional week. Malawian police stated that their actions were lawful and that Kaliati’s rights would be upheld. The UTM party had been a component of the nation’s government until June, when it withdrew after the passing of its leader, Saulos Chilima, who held the position of vice-president. Chilima, aged 51, died when a military aircraft he was aboard crashed in a northern Malawian forest. Subsequently, Kaliati has put herself forward as a candidate to succeed Chilima as party leader, intending to contest against Chakwera in the upcoming presidential election next year. Kaliati, who was a primary school teacher prior to her political career, is recognized for her candid and direct communication style.
