During the recent international break, Chelsea has been associated with Liverpool’s goalkeeper Coamhin Kelleher, following a period of inconsistent performances from Robert Sanchez. Despite denials from club sources regarding these reports, discussions persist concerning Chelsea’s primary goalkeeper position. Sanchez has been responsible for three mistakes directly leading to goals, a higher number than any other goalkeeper. These errors included two instances against his previous team, Brighton, and conceding a penalty against Manchester United. Additionally, the 27-year-old Spain international was attributed blame for Curtis Jones’s winning goal for Liverpool at Anfield, even though it was not officially recorded as an error. It is important to note that Chelsea’s most senior player also demonstrated strong performances in games against Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest, securing points for his team through several exceptional saves. Ben Roberts, the head of goalkeeping, played a significant role in the acquisition of Sanchez. Roberts previously worked with Sanchez at Brighton and moved to Chelsea alongside Graham Potter, subsequently being promoted from goalkeeping coach despite Potter’s dismissal in 2023. He is currently serving as a goalkeeper coach under new manager Enzo Maresca, concurrently fulfilling his broader responsibilities, which involve overseeing the development of all goalkeepers within the club and significantly influencing player recruitment for the position. This summer, Filip Jorgensen was acquired from Villarreal for £20.7 million and has featured in cup fixtures for the squad referred to as the ‘B team’. Consequently, the Danish player, born in Sweden, has not yet made a Premier League start. However, he is reportedly well-suited to Maresca’s tactical approach, a style that proved advantageous for Mads Hermansen at Leicester during the previous season, prior to their upcoming encounter on Saturday. Jorgensen’s arrival led to the displacement of Djorje Petrovic, a competent former first-choice goalkeeper, who is still contracted to the club. This is also the case for Kepa Arrizabalaga, currently on loan at Bournemouth, who has no prospect of returning to the club. Nevertheless, the possibility remains for Petrovic to rejoin from his loan period at partner club Strasbourg in Ligue 1. The Serbian player has performed exceptionally in France and has positioned himself as the leading candidate to become his national team’s starting goalkeeper for the first time. Neither Sanchez, Jorgensen, nor Petrovic has yet established themselves at the elite level of football, but each appears to possess the potential to advance further. Additionally, the club has numerous young goalkeepers under contract, including Mike Penders, Gabriel Slonina, and Eddie Beach; these players are currently at other clubs but might be utilized in upcoming seasons. Seeking a goalkeeper in the transfer market appears to be an improbable course of action, as Chelsea will likely support their existing recruitment strategy, believing a long-term first-choice goalkeeper is already within their ranks. The identity of this player will depend on individual performances, with Sanchez expected to retain the number one spot through the winter.
