An exceptional Anglo-Saxon gold and garnet sword mount will be exhibited in Chichester. The Novium Museum successfully raised the final £9,000 required to acquire the rare gold artefact, utilizing both donations and grants. This mount, unearthed in 2022 close to Stopham, originates from the period between AD600 and AD700. As stated by Chichester District Council, it represents only the second discovery of its type in West Sussex. Councillor John Cross commented: “This has been a true community effort, and we are immensely grateful to everyone who supported our campaign to keep this rare treasure in the Chichester district.” The museum’s acquisition was supported by the Arts Council England/V&A Purchase Grant Fund, alongside a contribution from the landowner. Additionally, 166 contributions were made by the community, featuring a “generous offline donation exceeding the target”. Per the donor’s wishes, the surplus funds will be allocated to the artefact’s conservation and exhibition. Had the museum failed to secure the necessary funds, the mount would have first been presented to the British Museum, and subsequently offered for private sale if rejected. Mr. Cross, who serves as the council’s cabinet member for culture, sport, and place, stated: “It is so exciting to be able to keep this local treasure within the Chichester District and display it for the local and wider community to enjoy.”
