Owen Angier, a 23-year-old resident of Littleport, near Ely, Cambridgeshire, has completed his most challenging baking endeavor yet: a gingerbread replica of Ely Cathedral measuring almost 60cm (2ft) in length. Mr. Angier, who typically bakes a unique item for Christmas, stated that he decided to honor the local landmark this year. The apprentice nurse, employed at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, expressed his pleasure after sharing images of his creation online, noting that The Great British Bake Off remarked, “Wow, so impressive”. He added, “I just hope to have caught even just a smidge of the building’s splendour in my creation.” Mr. Angier explained that he perceived Ely Cathedral as possessing “magnificent architectural beauty,” leading him to conclude that constructing a gingerbread model was an ideal method to both honor the structure and test his baking skills. He elaborated, “I wanted to capture some key features of the cathedral’s exterior,” specifically mentioning “Particularly the octagon, which stands central to the cathedral.” He further stated, “The cathedral itself has so many astounding features, and while I would have loved to have included all of them, it was definitely necessary to take some artistic liberties in this format.” According to Mr. Angier, the entire project, encompassing template planning, baking individual components, and piping, was completed within a single day. A minor challenge for Mr. Angier is his personal dislike for gingerbread. He intends to dismantle the model and bring it to his workplace, allowing colleagues to savor a portion of Ely Cathedral alongside their coffee.
