A new loan initiative is providing individuals with an opportunity to experience riding an e-bike. The Pedal Eazy project enables adults residing in Gloucestershire to rent an electric bicycle for a maximum duration of three months. The monthly rental cost is £70, reduced to £30 for jobseekers. This initiative aims to foster sustainable transportation within the county. Should a participant choose to buy a bicycle, the rental charges can be reimbursed as a voucher, intended to encourage ongoing cycling. Councillor Cate Cody, who leads the Green Party at the council, stated, “E-bikes enable people to travel further than by conventional bike.” She further commented, “Many people have never used an e-bike and this excellent scheme gives the opportunity to try one.” Funding for this program is provided by Gloucestershire County Council’s Thinktravel team, with the objective of promoting healthier and more environmentally friendly transportation options. Recent UK-wide statistics compiled by Sustrans, a cycling and walking charity, indicate that while 36% of individuals surveyed reported cycling, only 15% engage in cycling at least once weekly. The charity noted that despite electric bikes sometimes being perceived as “cheating,” they significantly enhance the accessibility of bicycle travel for numerous individuals and assist them in incorporating more physical activity into their daily lives. Reservations for the Pedal Eazy scheme are available via the Gloucestershire Bike Project or Transition Stroud. For updates, follow BBC Gloucestershire on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
