Sylvia Dalton, 103, ‘Amazed’ by Over 2,000 Birthday Cards

A great-grandmother has been sent over 2,000 birthday cards in honor of her 103rd birthday. Sylvia Dalton’s care home in Middlesbrough sought to provide a “special surprise” for her milestone celebration on Friday. They issued a request for birthday cards on social media, initially hoping to receive 103, but the volume of incoming cards significantly surpassed this expectation. Mrs. Dalton expressed that she was “amazed” and “enjoyed reading them very much.” Her family consists of three daughters, six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, whose residences range from Scotland to Guernsey. Throughout the majority of her professional career, Mrs. Dalton worked as a teacher in Stockton-on-Tees, where she eventually became the headteacher of an infant school. Kelly Deane, the deputy manager at Montpellier Manor Care Home in Stainton, where Mrs. Dalton has resided since 2023, characterized her as a “gorgeous, lovely lady, who lives a very social life.” Ms. Deane added, “She loves chatting to people.” When questioned about the reason for the birthday card appeal, Ms. Deane stated: “It’s quite an achievement to get to the age of 100, never mind 103, so we just wanted to do something special for her while she’s here with us.” She further remarked on the overwhelming response: “We are just so amazed at how many we’ve received, people have been so kind and thoughtful, it’s just overwhelming really.”
