Ulster head coach Richie Murphy has expressed his “very proud” feelings regarding his sons, Ben and Jack, as they are set to potentially compete against each other for the first time in senior rugby this Saturday. Ben Murphy and his Connacht team will host his father and younger brother at the Sportsground in Galway for the United Rugby Championship match. Ben Murphy, the 23-year-old Connacht scrum-half, has played in eight matches for the Westerners since his transfer from Leinster during the summer. Meanwhile, his 20-year-old brother, Jack, made his debut for Ulster in their recent defeat against Munster. Richie Murphy, smiling, commented on the situation, stating, “It’s more of a sideshow for my wife.” He had previously coached against Ben in October when Ulster defeated Connacht in Belfast. Murphy added, “She’s the one that has to deal with all three of us. I definitely don’t envy her position at the moment.” Murphy, whose team has experienced five consecutive losses, further remarked: “I haven’t been a very happy husband over the last couple of weeks with not getting those victories that you’re talking about. In that, you’ve got Jack at 20 years of age, coming in and making his senior debut and Ben down in Galway. This time last year, the four of us were sitting in Bray: Ben was at Leinster, Jack was getting ready for the Irish [Under]-20s, our whole lives have changed very quickly. But we’re very proud of the two lads, they work very hard at their craft and we’ll see what happens at the weekend I suppose.” Following Richie’s appointment as Ulster’s head coach earlier this year, Jack departed the Leinster academy to join his father in Belfast. He made his initial appearance on Friday, stepping in for the injured Stuart McCloskey. In the match against Munster, Jack opted to kick to the corner rather than attempting a goal, which could have potentially secured a draw for Ulster in a game they ultimately lost by a score of 22-19. Murphy further elaborated, stating, “Jack, unfortunately for him, I’m probably more hard on him because he’s right here in front of my face. It’s difficult for both of us. It’s difficult to pick your son at 20 years of age but difficult for him because of the last couple of weeks in training, he’d been doing really well and hadn’t been getting picked. He came on, I think James [Humphreys] has done well in the cameos he’s had. Aidan [Morgan] has started all of our games up to this point. We’re in a situation where we have three young 10s and we want to make sure we get the best out of the three of them.” For Saturday’s fixture, Ulster will be without the injured centre Stuart McCloskey. However, the Ireland international trio of Cormac Izuchukwu, Nick Timoney, and Iain Henderson have all returned to team training. In the URC standings, Ulster is positioned 11th, one spot below Connacht, with both teams having secured three victories from eight matches. On their previous visit to Galway, Ulster squandered a 20-3 advantage, allowing Connacht to stage a comeback and win 22-20.
