Ulster’s head coach, Richie Murphy, stated that his team’s fundamental skills were insufficient for the demands of a “European juggernaut” following their substantial loss to holders Toulouse in their Champions Cup opening match, where they allowed nine tries. At the Stade Ernest-Wallon, Ulster, as the visiting team, allowed nine tries and were defeated 61-21 by the reigning champions in their initial Champions Cup fixture. Murphy described the experience as “Very tough,” adding, “Conceding 61 points wasn’t part of the plan. A lot of our basics weren’t at the level they needed to be.” He further noted, “Some of our defence and our breakdown just wasn’t at the level we needed.” This defeat adds to Ulster’s recent record in the Champions Cup, where they have secured only two victories in their last 11 matches and have given up a minimum of 30 points in eight of those encounters. Murphy emphasized the importance for his team to maintain their focus on incremental progress. He stated, “We also need to be careful that we don’t listen to too much stuff that’s happening outside.” He continued, “We have to concentrate on our own game and make sure that we’re getting better.” Murphy concluded by saying, “We’ve shown signs that we’re improving all through the season from where we were last year and we’ve run into a European juggernaut and we weren’t at the races.” Ulster is scheduled to play against Bordeaux-Begles, another highly-rated team in the competition, in Belfast this Saturday. Murphy acknowledged the team’s sentiment, adding, “Obviously we’re disappointed, the players are disappointed.” He further commented, “We don’t go out there to get those basic errors wrong.” Murphy concluded, “You start there and you work towards getting a performance in six days’ time against Bordeaux.”
