A blast occurred at an ammunition and explosives manufacturing facility in north-west Turkey, resulting in the deaths of at least 12 individuals and injuries to four others. According to Ismail Ustaoglu, the governor of Balikesir, the incident took place in the capsule production area at 08:25 local time (05:25 GMT). Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that while the exact cause remains undetermined, officials have dismissed sabotage as a factor. Footage from the site depicted a fireball emerging from the facility, causing damage to a section of the structure, succeeded by columns of dark smoke. Subsequent video evidence from the aftermath revealed twisted steel debris scattered across the vicinity. Witnesses informed CNN Turk that the explosion generated tremors across the Köteyli township. Officials reported that numerous fire brigades were deployed to manage the conflagration, and health and security personnel were sent to the location. Mr. Ustaoglu conveyed his sentiments in a social media post, stating: “I wish God’s mercy upon our deceased citizens and a speedy recovery to our injured.” Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc confirmed that an inquiry has commenced to ascertain the events preceding the explosion.
