The swimming team from BBC Radio Oxford has successfully concluded its Children in Need fundraising challenge, having covered a distance of 24 miles (38.6km) over the course of a week. This local effort was part of The Thousand Mile Challenge, which involved various groups from BBC radio stations throughout the United Kingdom. The local participants included Breakfast Show presenter Sophie Law, Breakfast newsreader Dan Freeman, journalists Sophie Rumsby and Jordan Brooks, and apprentice Jem Westgate. To achieve their goal, they swam 63 lengths daily at the Ferry Leisure Centre in Summertown, Oxford. Throughout the challenge, the team encountered both uplifting moments and significant setbacks. An inspiring high was when Dan from Wantage, who described himself as a “non-swimmer,” joined the team, motivated by their dedication. A notable low occurred on the second day when Mr Freeman forgot his swimming trunks. However, the challenge also highlighted Mr Brooks’ exceptional swimming abilities, which he has honed since childhood despite being diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a baby. Additionally, an anonymous £500 donation on the fourth day significantly boosted morale. Prior to the challenge, Ms Law and Mr Freeman were given guidance by gold medal-winning Olympic swimmer Kieran Bird. Following the completion of the swim, Ms Law stated that it was time for “carb loading, wine, and bed.” She described the last length as “very emotional,” noting that listener Dan participated for “his first ever length of a pool.” Ms Rumsby commented: “There’s been ups and downs but finally we’ve finished.” She added, “I think we’re all super proud that we managed to complete the challenge but also relieved it’s over. Time for a rest now.” Mr Brooks remarked, “After a very long week, it was good to get to the finish line as a team.” He continued, “An amazing effort, and to see Dan join us and swim his very first length was inspiring.” He also expressed interest in future events, asking, “I’d definitely be up for another challenge next year – anyone got any ideas?” To date, BBC local radio stations have collectively raised over £100,000 through this swim challenge.
